We were thrilled to host
students from Dora High School
at the Springfield Art Museum
Thursday, February 28!
Students in Dora have been
participating in a Placeworks
project with teaching artist
Kate Baird during the month of
February. The project was
centered around contemporary art
history. Kate traveled to Dora
for the first two sessions and
the last session was dedicated
to taking a field trip and
experiencing art in person at
the museum.
We knew that several of the
students from Dora had never
been to the museum before, so we
wanted to think of an
interactive way to get them
involved with the current
exhibitions. Thus, the photo
scavenger hunt was born! We
worked in groups and used
digital cameras (flash off, of
course!) to capture images of
the art currently on display and
answer a series of
questions/writing prompts. After
taking the pictures, students
used weebly.com to create a free
website and upload the photos
and responses.

A great big thank you to Dora
Art Teacher Kelli Albin for
participating and the
Springfield Art Museum for
hosting us! We had a great time!

The Southwest Missouri Museum
Association, Inc.
started as an Art Study Club
organized by Miss Deborah Weisel in
1926 with six members: Mrs. John W.
Byng, Mrs Edwina Cossey, Mrs. Guy
Evans, Mrs. Lewis Luster, Mrs.
Thomas Martin, and Mrs. Edward
Wilhoit. Miss Weisel was a fine arts
teacher at Springfield State
Teachers College (now
Missouri State University). The
group incorporated as the
Springfield Art Museum in 1928 and
deeded the museum and its properties
to the City of Springfield in 1947.
We then became an organization of
over 600 members called the
Southwest Missouri Museum
Associates
(SMMA).
